How to Choose the Perfect Karate Gi: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Share
Walking into your first karate class is exciting β but knowing what to wear can feel overwhelming. With so many options available, choosing the right gi is one of the most important decisions a new karateka makes. This guide breaks it all down.
What Is a Karate Gi?
A gi (pronounced "ghee") is the traditional uniform worn in karate training and competition. It consists of three parts: the jacket (uwagi), the pants (zubon), and the belt (obi). The belt colour indicates your rank and experience level.
The Two Main Types of Gi
1. Training Gi (Kata Gi)
Made from lightweight cotton, typically 8β10 oz fabric weight. These are ideal for daily training because they are breathable, easy to wash, and move freely. If you are just starting out, a training gi is the right choice.
2. Competition Gi
Made from heavier, stiffer fabric (12β16 oz). Competition gis are designed to look crisp and professional on the mat. They are WKF-approved for tournament use and make a distinct snapping sound during techniques β a hallmark of good form.
Choosing the Right Size
Karate gis are sized differently from regular clothing. Most use a numerical sizing system (0000 to 7) based on your height rather than your chest or waist measurement. Always consult the size chart before ordering. A well-fitted gi should allow full arm movement without the jacket lifting above your belt.
Fabric Weight Guide
- 8 oz β Lightweight, ideal for children and beginners
- 10 oz β Mid-weight, great for regular training
- 12 oz β Competition weight, crisp appearance
- 14β16 oz β Heavyweight, used in Kyokushin and contact styles
WKF Approval β Does It Matter?
If you plan to compete, yes. The World Karate Federation (WKF) has strict specifications for competition uniforms including fabric weight, sleeve length, and colour. All RetailRise competition gis meet WKF standards. For casual training and beginners, WKF approval is not essential.
Our Recommendation for Beginners
Start with a lightweight 8β10 oz training gi in white. White is the universal colour for beginner karateka across all styles. As you advance and begin competing, you can upgrade to a competition-grade uniform.
